The Relationship between Neighborhood Characteristics and Homicide in Karachi, Pakistan

The geographical concentration of criminal violence is closely associated with the social, demographic, and economic structural characteristics neighborhoods. However, few studies have investigated homicide patterns their relationships neighborhoods in South Asian cities. In this study, spatial temporal incidences Karachi from 2009 to 2018 were analyzed using local indicators association (LISA) method. Generalized linear modeling (GLM) geographically weighted Poisson regression (GWPR) methods implemented examine relationship between influential factors number homicides during 2009–2018 period. results demonstrate that hotspot or clustered areas high counts expanded 2013 decreased 2018. 2017–2018 period had a positive percentage population speaking Balochi. unplanned low-density residential land use low counts, patrolled by police forces significant negative occurrence homicide. GWPR models effectively characterized varying explanatory variables across study area. spatio-temporal analysis can be adapted explore violent crime other cities similar social context.
